Your favorite dress recycled

Living in Italy for months on just a few suitcases means you must recycle your favorite pieces. I wore this dress on New Years but wanted to bring it back in a new way last night.

I decided to turn the above dress into a top by tucking it into my Express pencil skirt.

Mixing and matching items will expand your closet in a creative way. This can be used with shorts and jeans too. I like the pencil skirt with a tucked in tight dress because it is smooth and ties together great!

It’s A Black And White Spring!

I recently posted the official Spring/Summer color guide for 2014! I know.. They were BOLD and BRIGHT, but the black & white staple look has been hotter than ever. The posh look strolled the runways in a major way during fashion week. We saw floral prints, stripes, and big totes all in black and white.

Although Versace has a Spring/Summer  pastel bag line appropriately enough, they also have new totes in ALL black. I don’t know which I love more…  Lady Gaga’s Ad or the bag below. Donatella and Lady Gaga have a similar aura.. Agree?

Gel Mani & Pedi at home!

It all started back in the day for me with Lee press-on nails. I have memories of sitting on my bedroom floor laying out my color collection and picking the look for that day. I was constantly doing my own nails hoping to not spill on my white carpet (which happened too often). Once I grew up and made my own income, I would visit my local nail salon every 10 days or so to get my acrylics filled with a gel top coat and pedi.. Choosing the design, color, shape, etc. is a fun way to express your style and mood.

Well… Living in Italy and starting my own online boutique has changed things in my life, like not getting my nails done in hopes of being frugal. Not to mention there aren’t nail shops on every corner like we lucky girls have in Tampa or any metro U.S. city for that matter. But this does not stop me from looking polished and keeping a fresh coat!

I discovered the Deborah Lippmann gel coat polishes before leaving the states during one of my many trips to Ulta. This kit comes with a base coat and a top coat. First apply the base coat and let dry (dries quick), next add a color if you wish, finally add your top coat. This  extends your manicure, helps avoid chipping, and gives you that professional look.

You can also purchase Deborah Lippmann color polish as recommended, I have used a variety of brands for the color and it seems to be just fine. My tip is apply one coat of color because if the polish becomes to thick you may see it peel off over a few days. I also love the Kiss nail art, which is extremely affordable and they really last! Create your own design with the crystals or flowers after you complete the color steps. Apply a very small amount of clear polish over the design to hold down tight for a lasting look.

Voilà!!

  • Healthy alternative to acrylic and salon gel

Fun In Floral

Floral pencil skirt for Spring 2014. OVS in Italy showing their spring floral pieces.

Spring 2014 is full of bright colors, botanical prints, and feminine lace! I still love high-wasted skirts that fit the body just right, so mix this hot print with an accentuating pencil skirt and I will be happy. This skirt is available at the European store, OVS in Italy for only 16 Euros. They did not have my size, but I will be checking out the other local locations for this product. Its reminiscent of 70s daisy flowers but the black background gives this skirt a grown woman look.

Hopefully similar stores in The U.S. like H&M will carry looks like this.

Spruce Up Your Denim

Spring is here.. Well it feels like it in some places more than others.. Its time to for spring cleaning and putting away those winter clothes. As much as I want a new spring/summer wardrobe that is not going to happen, so I was inspired to spruce up my denim shorts.

I happen to have a couple of old shirts made out of lace so I decided to go with this fabric but of course you can use anything you’d like.. Lace is hot right now as well as floral print.

Any lace shirt can be cut up for lace pockets on a pair of denim shorts.

Any lace shirt can be cut up for lace pockets on a pair of denim shorts.

Start by cutting a larger piece of fabric from the shirt, table cloth, or whatever fabric you are using. Make sure it is larger than the pocket so you can size correctly. Place this fabric on top of the pocket you will be covering, hold with push pins. Cut by tracing the size. Stitch the lace right onto the outer pocket with needle and thread. Now you have yourself a new pair of shorts to ROC!

Love the simplicity and feminine touch that the lace adds to these light washed denim shorts.

Four Layer Lasagna

As they say, when in Rome…  Tonight I am excited to get in the kitchen and prepare homemade lasagna. This is a dish that requires, patience, steps, flavor, and fresh ingredients. This Italian staple can be made with a variety of ingredients, similar to pizza in that fashion. I am making the original lasagna with bolognese red sauce and a cheesey top that is browned just right (of course!). bolognese meat sauce originates form Bolonga, Italy which is down the road from where I currently living, so I felt this is an appropriate choice.  This can also be made with white sauce, spinach, chicken, and cheese… All depends what your in the mood for.

My boyfriend doesn’t get home from practice till 8 pm so I have two full hours to get cooking. Once I sliced into my bell pepper  I knew it would be good night…

Is my pepper smiling at me? lol

Is my pepper smiling at me? lol

I start by prepping the vegetables for my meat. I dice 1 small onion, 1 green pepper, and 2 garlic cloves minced.

Set aside. I season my ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, dash of paprika then add the meat into a hot frying pan. I like to let the meat cook for a couple of minutes then add the diced onion, green pepper, and garlic. The flavors will saute into the meat while cooking till the meat is browned.

By now your house is smelling good! While your meat is cooking prepare a pot for your sauce. Add two bottles of your favorite traditional tomato sauce, 1 can of diced tomatoes, and the seasonings. I season the sauce with garlic powder, black pepper, salt, paprika, sugar, and Italian seasoning. I like to taste test as I season because you can always add more but you cant reverse an over seasoned sauce. If you like spicy add a couple shakes of crushed red pepper to your sauce (the sugar will blend great for a sweet heat flavor). Add the cooked meat and let simmer for a while.. The longer you let cook on low the more the flavors will blend together.

Lasagna sauce

Boil the noodles as directed. Cook to be firm since we will be baking the dish once everything is set.

lasagna noodle

Putting the pieces together..  First, line the bottom of the pan with a layer of sauce. On top of the sauce add a layer of noodles covering the sauce.  Next add another layer of sauce on top of the noodles.

lasanga dish 1

Using a spoon dollop sour cream and cottage cheese randomly on the sauce (about 2 table spoons of each on each layer). Add the next noodle layer and follow the above steps again until your pan is full of layers, I usually end of up with 4 layers.

Lasagna dish 3

The last layer will be sauce, cottage cheese, and the sour cream layer. This is when you want to add the cheese! I cover the entire top of mine with cheese.. I am an extra cheese kind of girl. This part is up to you.

Lasagna dish 4

Pop your creation into the oven at 350 degrees until the top is slightly browned. Enjoy!

Bon appetit!

Ingredients-

Sauce:

  • 2 jars of traditional marinara sauce
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 diced green pepper
  • 1 diced onion
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • crushed red pepper (to taste)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 table spoon of Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tablespoon of paprika

Other ingredients-

  • 1 box of lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound of ground beef (or choice of ground meat)
  • 2 cups of mozzarella or cheddar cheese for topping.(I’ve been using a mild cheddar yellow cheese)
  • 1 small container of sour cream
  • 1 small container of cottage cheese
  1. Dice the bell pepper, onion, and garlic.
  2. Season the ground beef (or meat of choice) with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Begin browning the meat, add the bell pepper, onion, and minced garlic to the meat while cooking. Cook till done. Set aside.
  4. Mix the sauce ingredients into a large pot, simmer for a few minutes (stirring occasionally). Then add the cooked meat to the sauce. Let simmer and stir occasionally on low for 45 minutes or longer The longer you allow to simmer, the more the flavors marinate.
  5. Meanwhile cook the lasagna noodles as directed. Cook the noodles firm since you will be baking them as well.
  6. Layer the bottom of a baking dish with a layer of the sauce, then add a layer of the noodles, again cover with sauce then dollop the sour cream and cottage cheese randomly on the sauce (about a quarter of each container).
  7. Add a noodle layer over this mixture and start the process over again. Create about 3-4 layers. I like to do 4 layers without shorting on the sauce.  once you are on the final layer of sauce, cottage cheese, and sour cream add a full layer of the shredded cheese instead of noodle layer. Cook on 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or till top layer is lightly browned.
  8. Let cool. Serve with a fresh garden salad. .

Men Of The Oscars!

Our favorite looks of The Oscars 2014!

Our favorite looks of The Oscars 2014!

The men were looking so fresh and so clean last night.. Here are our favorite masculine looks of the 2014 Oscars.

Left: Bradley Cooper in Tom Ford is looking dapper and handsome. This suite fits him great and the rugged beard does not hurt either. Looking better than even in my opinion

Middle: Will Smith in Berluti is looking gorgeous and his selection fits his cool, laid back look just right. The open collar is comfortable and sexy.

Kevin Spacey in Burberry is looking edgy and young. This was a perfect selection to add some youth and color. This blue suit is my favorite look for the men this year because it is eye catching and pops. Burberry was a great choice last night.

Phew! They had some lucky dates but of course they were stunning as well.

Ladies Of The Oscars

I am living in Italy right now so with the time difference, I did not stay up to watch The Oscars but I did take part in the red carpet (of course!).. My favorite looks this year all seem to be within the black and white theme, except for Mrs. Washington. Plunging necklines, fishtails, halter top neckline, and beautiful textures were very popular last night. Love the plunging neckline look!

Left: Portia De Rossi wearing Naeem Khan. I love the detail of this fabric. The print almost reminds me of Louis Vuitton desgin but its not. The cinched waist and hip hugging design looks flattering and fabulous on Ellen’s longtime girlfriend.

Top left: Kate Hudson wearing Atelier Versace. This white gown is stunning and fits like a glove. The best part is the plunging open back design and draped cape look. I am always a big fan of open back dresses. The shoulder pads even work well here.

Bottom middle: Kerry Washington –The star of  Scandal  wore a purple strapless gown by Jason Wu. Royal purple is my favorite color, so no wonder why I choose  this gown  as my favorite look at this years Oscars, or maybe it is because Kerry is glowing?! She is stunning with her dark lip and matching nail polish. Flawless.

Not to mention Scandal is my absolute favorite TV show.. I usually don’t get to obsessed with popular TV seasons. However this is my guilty pleasure and I don’t know what to do with myself when an episode ends.. Wait an entire week!?!? Ugh! If you have not watched go on Netflix, start at the beginning, and be prepared for your own obsession!

Top right: Anne Hathaway in Gucci halter gown. Wow. The photo probably does not do this dress justice because I can tell that the intricate design and detail is perfection. This slim fitting gown looks like a million bucks to me. Black and gold is regal and fit for a movie star. The back has a slit that ads sex appeal as well. I would love to try this dress on, just one time! It shines in all the right places.

Bottom right: Charlize Theron is a natural beauty but last night she was looking like a star in this black mermaid/fishtail fitting gown. This dramatic sexy look was paired with dripping diamonds.

Now we will wait to see what the Fashion Police have to say! Cant wait for the premier Oscar episode on E Friday night! I am sure the ladies and gents will have their claws out.. Raawr!
